Welcome to the HOME PAGE for The Old School, Wythop Mill

Economical bunkhouse-style self-catering accommodation in a Victorian village school building set in a secluded rural location in the northern Lake District. It can be hired by families and small groups with shared kitchen and common room, or for exclusive use of the whole centre for parties up to a maximum of 20.

The Old School is an imaginative venue for daytime courses or  meetings. It can also be an ideal location as a base for a day's field studies and other activities in the surrounding outdoor environment. The common room includes a  wall-mounted projection screen, and daytime hire can include the use of all facilities - commercial kitchen, toilets, showers.

Wythop Mill is a few minutes drive from Bassenthwaite Lake and Whinlatter Forest with Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale, and Cockermouth within very easy reach. It is a convenient base for day trips to Carlisle, the Roman Wall, Ambleside and Windermere.

Wythop Mill & The Old School

The hamlet of Wythop Mill is between Keswick and Cockermouth, half a mile from the A66 which links directly to M6 Junction 40, some 30 miles distant. The Old School stands alone on the flanks of Ling Fell where, as Embleton & Wythop CofE Primary School, it served its community until closure in the 1970s, when it became a field study centre for Trinity School, Carlisle. Now it is available for total or part hire by educational and other groups, families and individuals. The C2C cycle route passes The Old School with other cycle/walking routes  and Whinlatter Forest Park nearby.

Stay for charity!

This is a collaborative venture where any profits from the use of The Old School go directly to local charity. The Embleton & Wythop School Foundation Trustees support the education of young people resident in the area.

The Old School is managed and run by volunteers on behalf of a locally-based charity, Dewode, Uganda. All funds that Dewode, Uganda raises through running The Old School support a rural village community in north-eastern Uganda and have so far funded a self-sufficency agricultural women's group who have now developed a health centre as well as supporting schools in the area. www.dewode.co.uk
